Jan. 1, 1961 Elmira Star Gazette - After logging more than two million miles, while using 28 new cars or trucks, Evans, 65, of 537 Chemung St., Waverly has retired as a district supervisor for The Star-Gazette. When he first started working for The Star-Gazette in 1920, and for about three years thereafter, Evans received the papers via trolley car from Elmira and then delivered them from Waverly. He recalls the first car he used in his work was an Overhauled Red Bird, followed by a Ford Model T truck. Evans is proud of the fact that all his two million miles of travel in his work was done without an accident, except for about three or four times when he tangled with deer on the highways.  When deer were more plentiful, he recalls that as many as 21 went over and around his car in one herd. His last such experience was when three deer leaped over his car from an embankment alongside the road. Prior to joining The Star-Gazette, Evans, Waverly native, worked for the Glen Curtiss Airplane Co., traveling from Hammondsport to all sections of the country to instruct pilots in foreign engines. For a hobby, Evans’ greatest interest has been in stock car racing. Evans had no immediate plans for the future. He has three sons, Henry Jr., Robert, and Richard, all of Waverly, and two grandchildren. (pic. of Henry Evans)
